On 30 April and 01 May the airport Niederrhein/Weeze celebrated their 5th anniversary. During both days the weather was overcastted with now and than a rain shower, but also some rays of sun. This former RAF Laarbruch base was host for several aircrafts which also included several RAF aircrafts. For a lot of visitors where the four RAF Harriers a common sight, as they where stationed for many years on this base. The four Harriers on static where send from the RAF Cottesmore based 4(AC) squadron. Furthermore was a Hawk T1A present of the RAF Valley based 4FTS/208(R) Squadron, and a Typhoon F2 of the 3(F) Squadron, normally based at RAF Conningsby. Other aircrafts participating during the airshow on Thursday, and also based on Conninsby, where three aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Around 15:00Lt two BBMF aircrafts came out of the clouds in the shape of a Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIX, and a Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc.

Shortly followed after the two fighters was the BBMF Douglas C-47 Dakota. Another large historic delegation was send from the Netherlands. Three aircrafts of the "Stichting Koninklijke Luchtmacht Historische Vlucht" made a appearance in the shape of a Beechcraft T-7 "Navigator", followed in formation by two Harvard Iib's. The "Duke of Brabant Air Force" made a very nice display with their B-25J Mitchell named carresignly 'Sarinah'. Earlier during the day arrived the PBY Catalina of the "Stichting Catalina PH-PBY". And last but not least was the beautiful restored Boeing N2S Stearman "Old Crow" present on static. Other fighter jets besides the RAF aircrafts was a operational German AirForce Tornado IDS from the nearby Norvenich base, and two non-operational beautiful restored F-104 Starfighters.

From other countries several old birds found their way to Niederrhein. From Oslo, Norway a P-51D Mustang performed a nice display owned by the Scandinavian Historic Flight. Painted as "Old Crow", the aircraft of one of the 8th AF aces, Col. Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson of the 357Th Fighter Group, 363rd Fighter Squadron. For the round flights that departed during the whole day between the displays was a Antonov AN-2 present in a sharp looking former "Deutsche Lufthansa" color scheme. Furthermore performed a YAK-52 a very tight and spectacular display, however the weather was during most of the display very bad. And last but definitely not least was among the highlights the wing walking display of Peggy Krainz with the Boeing Stearman PT17 flown by Friedrich Walentin. And my personal highlight was the beautiful looking North American Rockwell OV-10B-NH "Bronco" owned by "Association des Avions Anciens de la Drome (Montelimar)" which performed a great display. Originally designed as a armed reconnaissance aircraft in the COIN (counter insurgency) and forward air control (FAC) role, is it now used as the only flying Bronco in Europe to perform during airshows. All reviewed a very nice airshow and celebration of 5 years Niederrhein airport, and a great start for the 2008 airshow season.
