On 20 and 21 June the Royal Netherlands Air Force held their annual open door days, this year at Leeuwarden in the North of the Netherlands. I visited this year the arrival day on 19 June and the open door day on Friday 20 June. The weather on Thursday was very gray with almost all day rain, which made photographing the arriving participants highly challenging. During the end of the day the clouds made some more room for the sun, which resulted in photographs with much more contrast. The weather on the Friday was changing all day with scattered clouds and some sun. With the high operational use and reorganizations of air forces all over the globe, succeeded the RNLAF however in getting a nice and diverse list of participants.
This year only three display teams where present, with "Team Iskra" from Poland, the Royal Jordanian Falcons, and my favorite display team was present in the shape of the Italian "Frecce Tricolori". Solo Display teams where present in a larger variety. The RNLAF was present with the always explosive F-16 Solo Display Team, piloted by Ralph "Sheik" Aarts. And competing with the Dutch F-16 solo display was the F-16 Solo Display of the Belgium Airforce, piloted by Michaël "Mickey" Artiges. And in my humble opinion was this year Mickey the winner, with a much more aggressive and explosive display using every inch of the sky. Besides that was the flare burst of the Belgium F-16 illuminating the sky like a meteor shower. Also every time a great display is flown by the EF-18 Hornet of the Spanish Airforce. And last but certainly not least, was the display of the French Mirage 2000C flown by Francois "Ralloch" Rallet. In the last year of this display team, did they perform a more than impressive display, making them the best of the day in my humble opinion. In the "slow mover" solo display category, had the RNLAF a nice variety of surprises. With a display of two PC-9 Pilatus training aircraft, in the colors of the Slovenian and Irish Airforce. A Royal Navy Merlin HM Mk1 performed a surprising maneuverable display, flying around like a streamlined butterfly. NHIndustries was present with a NH-90 in the colors of the Dutch "Koninklijke Marine", however still in a down scaled version as the delivery of this helicopter is suffering of large delays. Furthermore older aircraft and helicopters made a much appreciated appearance, with a Avro Lancaster, a UH-1 Huey and a OV-10 "Bronco" as the highlights.
Every year a great experience to see is the large scale "AirPower" demo, which includes the participation of almost every aircraft type in the Dutch inventory. With this year a highly surprising role of the KDC-10 tanker, which performed a display that could be compared to a fighter aircraft. With the gear extended, flew the KDC-10 just a few centimeter above the runway over the whole length, were it made a steep climb at the end of the runway, boosting all engines into the clouds. All reviewed again some great days, were the RNLAF had some nice and unexpected surprises during both days. With as highlights the flying French Mirage 2000, RNLAF KDC-10, Belgium F-16 and Italian Frecce Tricolori. And the static F-4E Phantom from Greece and the Canadian P-140 Aurora, which made a great entrance on Thursday.
