From 14 till 28 June the German "Luftwaffe" organised again the yearly exercise ELITE 2007 ( Electronic Live Training Exercise ). Several different airbases in Germany are used to host all participants, including Neuburg, Manching, Landsberg, Norvenich, Nordholz, Buchel, Geilenkirchen, Laupheim and the base that I have visited was Lechfeld in the South of Germany. Lechfeld is the home of two Tornado ECR operated squadrons, named the JaboG 321 "Tigers", and on the other side of the base is the JaboG 322 "Flying Monsters" based.

For this years ELITE, Lechfeld was host for seven countries, including Poland with three SU-22M-2 Fitters, two Romanian Mig-21L's, two Italian Tornado ECR's, four English Tornado GR4's and two DA-20 Falcons from the Norwegian AirForce. Furthermore was the Turkish AirForce present with four F-16C-40-CF's and two F-4E-2020's from the rarely seen "Pirates" 171 Filo, normally based at Malatya - Erhaç, Turkey. Greece was present with two F-16C-52+-CF's, and one rare F-16D-52+-CF with the noticeable large "spine". To practice and improve the skills from both pilots and ground operating units you need to have a suitable area, all flights where therefore conducted in the large Heuberg Training Range, where all missile systems and targets where situated. Key element in destroying a missile side is discretion, and for the aircraft this means to stay as long as possible undetected for the missile sides. If detected, low flying and special flying tactics can be obtained, and the use of flares and/or "Jamming" ( which means: Transmitting signals of interference corrupt sensitive electronic devices so that they malfunction, providing incorrect data or cease providing information.) are highly valuable systems in use on all fighters. So every aircraft fitted with an AN/ALQ-184 ECM pod can be used for a jamming mission.

On the 21st of June, the Jagdbombergeschwader 32 organised a special media/spotter event to whiteness the event from close range next to the runway. The whole organisation of this spotter day was just perfectly arranged, and a lesson that more airforces can learn from. However a uncontrollable factor in military aviation is the weather, the weather around the Lechfled base during the planned morning mission was good. However on the practise range, the visibility was very low combined with high winds, causing the morning mission to be cancelled. Because a lot of photographers made a long trip from different corners of Europe, the PRO tried everything in his power to "save" the day. Therefore a static tour was arranged to visit and photograph all participants at their stands. After this the basevisit was extended, so the afternoon wave could be photographed during take-of. This included only one RAF Tornado GR4 (However the one with the special painted tail), and two Italian Tornado ECR's followed by some local based Tornado's for their late ELITE mission. Special thanks goes to the JBG 32 Public Relations and Stabunteroffizier, Sandra Reif for their hospitality. Hopefully till next year.
