Hello all,
When I first saw a photograph of an P-61 “Black Widow”, I thought it was a model for some action figure movie. I found however soon after that this aircraft existed for real, and became more interested in this massive beast.
The P-61 operated in almost all WO II theatres (Europe, Mediterranean and Pacific) and was used as a dedicated nightfighter. With a wingspan of 20 meters, two massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800-65W Double Wasp radial engines each delivering 2,250 hp and a impressive armament with brute firepower. Including four 20 mm Hispano M2 Cannons, four .50 calibre machine guns and the capability of carrying 6400 pounds of rockets and bombs. She became a feared aircraft by both Japanese and German aircraft pilots.

The firepower was very powerful, which was illustrated by P-61 Ace Herman Ernst. While he positioned the P-61 behind a German aircraft at +/- 2000 feet, he pushed the button of the four 20mm guns and the rounds hit the aircraft at both inner wing roots. Which turned the German aircraft into a cloud of dust, with only the wings falling to the ground.
To date only four P-61′s survived, with one aircraft located in Beijing, China and three aircraft located in the United States. Only one of these aircraft is currently worked on, to be airborne again. Till now the centre pod has been finished, and the tail booms are connected to the pod section. Until both engines are fitted, she has to wait for taxi runs, as the engines are fitted as counterweights for the tail boom.
Please have a look at the website of MAAM “Mid-Atlantic Air Museum”.

I certainly hope to see this beast airborne again.
